Looking Lionel trainsets ...?
Growing up, my family had one, old old Lionel Train Set and one of my favorite things in the morning Christmas woke up to find that Santa had settings trains with the tree and gifts. I'm looking to do the same for my son, but I'm starting from scratch as my parents still have and use the game I grew up. I know very little out of the assembly. My search results have come up with a lot of options that leaves me with some questions. 1) Is Lionel is still a quality product? 2) Are any of the options out there to be a better option? 3) Do I want to go with a gauge of O, O-27, Fast Track, or something else? I'm looking for a set that will last and something I can build on if my son continues his interest in trains. I would appreciate input anyone has on the subject.
Personally, I'd go online and go for a new era 1950 Lionel train. Prices have down slightly on auction Web sites, as with the current economy, people are selling this kind of thing. I grew up with Lionel age of my father since the early 1950, and the old open-frame AC motors are virtually indestructible current rate. By 1957, steam locomotives used smoke pellets, but cutting tablets aspirin work as well, and sometimes even better actually smoke in the form of granules have not been produced in recent decades. After 1957, liquid was used for smoke, still used today. Lionel still be a quality product, but the increased production of the 50 uses more metal construction, and is more durable. For other options, MTH / Railking may be something to consider. They do a good O-caliber team, and part of its production is high quality and reasonable price. Go to the track gauge OO-31 in diameter. O-27 is too tight in diameter, and heavy throttle hand that children tend to have, O27 is too easy to derail a train around curves. If you can get, O-42 is even better, and will fit a 4 * 8 sheets of plywood of the feet very well be setting a table someday. The extent to which types of transport, the old sheet material can be very cheap, and use it in my Lionel train in the basement of my father. It has lasted half a century until now, and probably triple! FasTrack is much more realistic but also much more expensive. Also has some plastic in its construction, which affect the durability. You decide from there.
