Training a year old Beagle-2 to sit, stay, etc?
ok, I just got a beagle for my husband and I to love and spend our time in excess, and likes to chew a lot, and she does not follow our orders. We bought some small pieces is the source of food, and she does not get the hint "sitting" when he wants to be petted, or "NO" when chewing our magazines and books. We received their toys, rawhide, bones, strings, and now I felt, but not working. We have also tried the "silent treatment" and a bit of a syringe, but, like all beagles, is stubborn. Anyone have some ideas of what to do? Thanks.
You are no doubt going to have a very difficult time training the dogs if it is 2 years old. I mean at that time they have been doing things their way for so long you have to completely retrain the dog. If you do not plan to seek professional help, then you have to keep up with what you're doing. If they want to sit, use a treatment, such as "SIT" and give the stock thrust until the dog sits. Then make a big deal of it with praise and give treatment. Keep at it until he gets it. In order to establish, first say that they feel (it works better when they know that this command already). after which she sits, say "Laydown" or "down" and that his hand with treatment at the same point and touch the ground. Usually the dog will seek treatment and if you go far enough, he'll finish him and sorta belly flop. If do not, you can pull on his front paws until she slept. Repeat the command while you're doing, and once again make a big fuss with praise and give treatment. If you keep at it, eventually learn. Repetition is key when training. As for the chewing goes ... Bitter Apple test on furniture. For magazines and books to give a stern "NO!" Bad Dog "and replace them with their chew toys. Also just try to keep the things you know it's going to bite it off or on sites you know you can get. The dog probably sees them as new toys and do not know any better.
