How I can control a potentiometer without voltage and current traveling through it.?
I have a project I'm trying to help someone - have a DC power source (A Model Train Transformer), and want to be able to control from a computer. I have a USB card potentiometer (ENT - www.controlanything.com) that I have set up, allowing me to move a slider and a meter connected to the output that can see the resistance to change. The problem is - if I try to connect the output of the DC power supply - fried the controller board which has a limit of 0-5 volts @ 1 mA. Currently, processors train (which has a 10K pot) is pulling closer to 50V DC, 10-15mA. Does anyone know how I can bypass the extra voltage current (without spoiling real output transformer train) and only the control of the resistance through the USB controller card? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
See this link circuits http://www.daycounter.com/Circuits/Voltage-Servo/Voltage-Servo.phtml You would have to add a regulated 5 volt source and connect the pot 5 volts to ground, and the cleaner to the control terminal. There are many schemes of voltage regulator circuit and even games on the web that are good for the 5 volt supply most hand, LM317. Write me if you have any questions.
