A historic steam locomotive 4-8-4
Locomotive number 60 004 out of Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1927. It was the 13th 4-8-4 type locomotive built United States. The first twelve have been discarded, leaving only 3751 as the oldest existing 4-8-4.
Destined for the Santa Fe Railroad, which was a new design experience for both the builder and operator. She was the first class of Santa Fe 4-8-4. Each costs $ 99,712.77 as delivered.
As had been built 3751 was an innovation in design, with 4-wheel truck behind to support the 108 sq / ft firebox. It included a steel bench of Separate cylinder engine and cast, with cross-counter-balanced 73-inch wheels. The total engine weight was 432,240 pounds. The total weight of the engine bent course scales at 724,600 pounds. There was a starting tractive effort of 66,000 pounds., With a maximum towing capacity from 3,200 to 40 kilometers per hour.
With arrival of eleven new 3765 class 4-8-4's in 1938, Santa Fe decided to rebuild the class 3751. The aim was to improve the engine to equal the 3765 class if possible. This project began in October 1938 and culminated with the 3751 which was completed in early 1941. Although due to the great drivers of the original effort of traction of 66,000 pounds remains the same. The conversion will however allow for speeds of 90 miles per hour and horsepower grew to 3,600 at 50 mph. This reconstruction of principal was successful in producing a more powerful and efficient engine.
In 1947, the ICC ordered the automatic train control to be used on locomotives over 79 mph. 3751 received new equipment mounted on the right truck trailer chassis that her schedule allows a maximum speed of 90 mph.
In 1949, the "diversion" type of battery was in place for use in the many tunnels in the degree of Tehachapi.
On August 25, 1953, the fire was extinguished, but until then had been about many famous Santa Fe trains such as the Scout, Navajo, the California Limited, the Chief of the rapid Mail and Express, the Grand Canyon Limited, Tova El, the San Diegan and standby for the Super Chief Diesel Streamliner in 1938. It is also interesting to note that while waiting of this train, 3,751 had improved performance of diesel locomotives with faster time between Los Angeles and Barstow, but this did not stop is assigned to history books - that is progress for you!
