Diesel Electric Train
What percentage of locomotives in the world are diesel-electric?
Where I live in the Mesabi iron range, and CN all trains are diesel-electric taconite. What else is there today?
Most of the world uses diesel-electric traction or electricity. However, the steam still is alive and well in China and Africa. Modern steam engines have improved a lot more of their ancestors, although they are still external combustion cylinder and still incorporate and sidebars or trucks targeted. The biggest improvement, at least in my view, is more than a "condensing" steam engine, ie much of the exhaust steam is captured and cooled, back in the condensed water, and boil again, to be "recycled." This reduces water consumption alleviate many problems with supply and frequent stops to drink more water. There was talk some years ago to build a steam engine diesel-electric hybrid. The diesel-electric have the advantage of a higher starting tractive effort, while steam can speed up and keep moving a greater amount of tonnage. Would be a capacitor motor, micro-processor controlled and powered by the insertion of pre-packaged containers of 50 tons of coal in service facilities. Never got off the drawing board but I think it is an idea whose time has come. In percentage terms the world is concerned, I would guess that making a plan about 90% are either electric or diesel-electric. Good question. Thanks for asking ..............................
