You set your benchwork and topographic base. Are you willing to go to the heart of the matter of deciding on your route of the train? It's time to lay some tracks and thread er 'up!

Wow! Only when I can I start? For the first year or so of your hobby, you may find it much easier just to buy tracks from scratch build. (Yes, truly devoted to this hobby actually build your own) And that's fine. The point of this hobby - and any hobby for that matter - is simply fun.

As a newcomer to the subject, jump with both feet, trying to do everything at once - building tracks, the landscape, even cars - can be a bit overwhelming.

Many people prefer to buy only products - all products, including landscapes and other structures - and just enjoy the locomotive and their cars. And you know, it works for me!

But if I'm going to talk about topics that can have that, need to talk about the manufacturers. Is only with the territory. When I speak of certain brands or models of topics (and others), please do not take these as meaning an endorsement of them in any way or form.

As you progress in achieving this search without haste, you'll see what I mean - and you'll find some favorites of your own!

What to expect

Track, for the most part, consists of one of the four materials. You can find brass, galvanized steel, steel, nickel and silver. Of these, brass and plated with zinc are the most common, but some fans swear by nickel silver.

Brass is a good conductor of electricity, but the care and cleaning associated with it tends to be a bit overwhelming at times.
On the side, the oxide that forms is a bad driver. Which tends to inhibit the operation optimal train.

In order to keep the train in running condition, needs to be cleaned frequently rails with track cleaning block. The other way to eliminate oxidation is to keep their cars running over them.

Galvanized steel is also more of a disadvantage.
