Arnold Schwarzenegger address for Detroit automakers
In the Global Environmental Leadership Conference presented by Newsweek, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave a speech and delivered very strong words for U.S. automakers. The governor wanted to manufacturers to make changes to reduce harmful exhaust greenhouse gases emitted by their vehicle models. He also commented on a billboard in Detroit, which criticizes for ordering the vehicle exhaust emission standards in California that auto manufacturers, particularly automakers based in Michigan are not willing to comply.
Here is a part of Schwarzenegger's speech.
"I have to say I'm a little surprised to be here, and why is because three years ago and a half when he ran for governor I followed everywhere by environmental protesters with signs. They did not like my Humvees and Hummers, and my SUV, or anything I did. As a matter of fact, when I promised I would improve the environment when he became governor, I do not either. So here we are, three and half years later, and I'm on the cover of Newsweek as one of the great environmentalists. Only in America, that's all I can say.
But let me tell you something, but I love being on the cover of Newsweek, but there must have been some other people on the cover too, and those are the people who were my colleagues in the Legislature. They have worked very hard, they were incredible partners, and I'm talking here about, first, Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senator Perata. I invited the two to come here but could not, but I just wanted to thank them publicly for being so great and Environmentalists and great leaders in the environment. So let's give a big hand, even though you're not here.
And I also thank someone who is here with us today, and this is Assemblywoman Fran Pavley. She has been a great warrior, very well.
Let me tell you something, what is the true business. This is the real deal. This woman has been fighting for the environment way before I became governor, and she has really been the author of these laws very important, and has worked with our office, and is a team player. And this is, you can see here, she is a Democrat. Also the President is a Democrat. Perata Senator is a Democrat. So this is what I'm talking, working together in a bipartisan or partisan message, and that's how to do things, because we work so is best for the people of California and the United States. So thanks again to Assemblywoman Pavley. (Applause)
Now, I know this is a conference environment, but I want to talk first about bodybuilding. And the reason is that bodybuilding is one of my passions, as you probably know, and has similarities there. Bodybuilding I used to have a very incomplete picture. As a matter of fact, so much so that some people who worked seriously and pumped weights did not admit they were doing bodybuilding. As a matter of fact, for example in the old days, some very famous Hollywood actors like Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, and the list goes on and on they all worked with weights, but never admitted it publicly, not wanting to be associated with the gyms that were like dungeons and that had fans, and strange people were in training there. That's the kind of image I had.
But we have changed, consciously changed. And what we did was we came out with a book called "Pumping Iron" I know many of you are familiar with that, especially students, then the movie Pumping Iron, and that the culture has changed, the image of bodybuilding, dramatically. As a matter of fact, the perception of bodybuilding began to change and became at the hip more and more and more and more attractive. And then, suddenly everyone wanted to exercise. As a matter of fact, today you can go anywhere the world and is a fitness gym or a place where you can do weight resistance training, and you can go into any gym and is the common people talking about his abs, his race, his deltoids, body fat, and all sorts of things. So this is how much has changed. It became mainstream, it was sexy and attractive.
And this is exactly what has to happen with the environmental movement. Like bodybuilders, environmentalists were seen as a kind of weird and fanatics also. You know, the kind of serious tree huggers. Environmentalists were no fun, they were like prohibitionists at a fraternity party. (Applause)
So someone the other day just showed me a cartoon that was a car salesman in a showroom talking to this couple. And the seller said car in the car and said: "This car runs on regular gasoline engine, and then when you feel a little guilty when guilt senses, changing to energy battery. "Now that's funny, it's a cartoon. But let me tell you something, there is much truth in that. For too long the environmental movement had been driven by guilt.
But I think this is about to change more than being fed by the guilt of being powered by something much more positive, much more dynamic, something much more capable of achieving significant change. You know the kind of guilt I'm talking about, chimneys belching pollution that are driving our Jacuzzis and our big screen TVs, and in my case, my private jet power. Therefore, it is very bad, of course, we can not all live simple lives, as Buddhist monks in Tibet. But you know something? That will not happen.
So ladies and gentlemen, do not think any movement has made and has made great progress based on guilt. Guilt is passive, guilt is inhibiting, and guilt is defensive. Do you remember the commercials several years ago, especially commercials of a Native American who sees what we have done to the environment and then a year runs down his cheek. You all remember that? Well, let me tell you something, this approach has not worked because successful movements are built on passion, not built on guilt. They are built on passion, are built on confidence, and are built on critical mass. And often, they are built on an element of alarm that pushes the action.
The environmental movement ie, to use a popular term on the point of inflection. You are about to reach the tipping point. There is a tipping point, and I think the turning point occurs when the environmental movement is no longer seen as a complaint or a scolding, but as a positive force in people's lives. Now I do not know when that tipping point occurs, but I know that in California. In California, we are doing everything possible to tilt the balance in the environment.
Now, first let me starting with government policy. Not go into all the initiatives that we have passed and all the laws we have passed, because that was already eloquently explained by John when he introduced me. But there are two things that stick we have received the most attention.
1. We passed a law to limit emissions of greenhouse gases by 25 percent in 2020. That basically means that we are reversing greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2020, and then we go to 80 percent lower than in 2050.
2. I ordered a 10 percent cut in carbon content of fuels for transport.
Now, I think the standards established in California will solve global warming? Of course not. But what we are doing is to make the implementation of what eventually tips of what the environment. That's what we're trying to do. It's like a seesaw. It is reached and then slowly leans away. That's what we're trying to do. California, as you know, is big, California is powerful, and what we do in California has unbelievable impact and implications. As a matter of fact, when we look at the world, California is a small place, but the type of power of influence that we have in the rest of the world is an equivalent of whole huge continent.
We are sending a message to the world. What we are saying is that we will change the dynamics of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions. We are taking action ourselves. We are not expecting anyone, we are not waiting for the federal government or Washington. We are creating our own association. We have partnered with Great Britain, we are partnering the provinces of Canada, with states in the United States, western states, with northeastern states. And you know what? Each year we are adding more couples and more to our team. We are increasing the momentum for change.
Now, there's a poster in Michigan that accuses me of automotive cost 85 billion dollars. They say that because of our new carbon fuel standards that cost 85 billion dollars. The sign says: "Arnold to Michigan was killed." The fact of the matter is, what I'm saying is, Arnold to Michigan-down ass. Get your ass and join us. (Applause)
In fact, California may be doing more to save U.S. automakers than any other, because what we are doing is that we are pushing for changes, to make changes so they can sell their cars in California. And we all know, let's be honest, if not change, someone else will. The Japanese will, the Chinese, South Koreans, Germans all of them. So what I do is, I want to prevent that from happening. I want to sell their cars in California. I believe strongly in American technology, and I think at the end technology will ultimately save Detroit.
Now, California, for example, has already a car company called Tesla Motors. Tesla Motors designed and built a car called the Tesla Roadster. It's 100 percent electric. Now, why is that a car that has never produced a car before is already producing a zero-emissions car with zero emissions and Detroit is still lagging behind? Now this car, let me tell you, is a very sexy looking car. It's really cool. I mean, I can prove who was driving. Goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. It drives 130 miles per hour and has 250 miles on a charge, then recharge is only 3 1 / 2 hours. Now, that's what I call cool. And the car cost $ 100,000 to be exact, $ 98,000, and is so popular, which sold out immediately. And now the second version is being produced, and the car, the cost will drop to $ 50,000.
So we can see where it leads, economics tells us that this is heading. It is like mobile cell. I remember when I bought a cell phone, the first mobile phone, which was kind of a radio telephone, for 20 years. Was $ 1,600. Next version I bought a few years later was 1,200, and the next was 750. I recently bought a cell phone for my daughter and it was below $ 90. Now, because costs have gone down, almost everyone can afford a cell phone, and the same will happen to environmental technologies in cars. Government can boost by setting standards, so California is giving the nation and the world a push. "
Well, let's wait and see if other Detroit automakers and Michigan, Chrysler Group, maker of Jeep models with quality Jeep ventilation hood can meet California emissions standards in the near future.
